Well, this is just a collection of all of my posts regarding Nokia N73 themes.
1. Downloading Themes From Websites :- Here is a collection of 10+ sites, where you can download themes for your Nokia N73. (Free)
2. Create Themes Using Your Phone:- Create simple themes with your phone alone.(Free)
3. Create Themes Using Web Interface (Free)
4. Create Themes Using Web Interface (Commercial / Paid)
5. The Most Powerful Tool for Creating Themes. (Free)
Creating themes for your phone can’t be simpler than this. You don’t need a computer or any web site. All you need is your Nokia N73 and a freely downloadable application called Theme DIY (Do It Yourself). Click photos using your N73 camera and make themes instantly with this application.
Download the application from Nokia China. The application is not lite. It takes over 3 MB of your phone memory (Download size is 1.3 MB). So consider installing it on your memory card.
Upon first running, the application will show you 12 empty theme slots. You can create and store up to 12 themes.
Click on any empty slots to create a theme. (Or you can edit a theme by clicking on it, provided it is not set as the default theme. So if you want to edit your current theme, then you need to change the current theme first)
You can select a theme template from the given six templates. It is the base for your theme.
Name your theme.
You can choose the background image for Idle screen. The selected effects (Fadeout, Blur) will be applied to the selected image when the Menu is active.
You can select a ring tone too.
Preview the theme and then Save.
This application is surely not the S60 Carbide.ui in a phone. It doesn’t offer endless customization options. But we love simple things, don’t we? :)
Note:- The Theme DIY is not a freeware. It is actually an application developed to install in phones developed by Nokia HongKong and Taiwan. You can read more about this, if you’re interested
Here is a free web site that allows you to create free themes for your Nokia N73 (Actually, it supports many phones). It is very simple. And yes, now it supports customization of application icons too – That is, you can use your own image or select from a large collection of icons and apply as your application’s thumbnail. (There are some cool Mac OS style icons :-) ). You can also create a theme by just uploading one image file. So it is the best place for starters as well. You can also share your theme and/or download themes created by other users.
Now you can create a theme in three steps.
Step 1: Create Idle Background (The one we see normally)
Upload your image. The site doesn’t support much editing options. So it is better to use your own editor to crop/resize the image to 320X240px and then upload (In this way, you can also save bandwidth too ). Otherwise, using the tools provided, we can crop an image. Hold Shift key to resize the selection rectangle and select an image area. Click on the Done button or Preview.
Step 2: Create Active Background
If you don’t need further customization just select the option Use Previous Image and Continue to step 3.
Upload the picture in the same way. You can preview and once you satisfied with the results, click Done.
Step3: Advanced Customization
Click on the Create My Skin Now for creating a skin with the default icon set for applications.
Otherwise click on Advance Settings button. Now you have several options. All changes can be previewed on the right side. So experiment with it and you will improve.
- Add Color Filter :- The image can be a little bit lightened for better readability using this filter.
- Analog Clock Style:- You can either upload your own clock image or select from an existing collection.
- Signal/Battery :- Select from gallery or upload
- Application Icon :- This is the best part. You can select an icon for the applications. Click on change icons. For each of the application listed there, you can either select an icon from the gallery or upload yours. There is a good collection of icons you can use including some cool Mac OS style icons. If you prefer your own icons, make sure they are of resolution 128 X 128px,
- Music Player / Calendar / Go to Background
- Popup Background / Selector / CallerID Background
Text & Icon Color :- Finally you can select the colors
After everything is done click on the Create My Skin Now button.
Now you can give the theme a name, description, tags etc. You can also select the share status. You can make it either public or private. Now you can Save the skin.
Now you can go to My themes for editing or downloading themes you have created.
Click on the theme thumbnails to get the download page. You can either download to PC or use your phone’s wap browser for downloading themes.
Upon registration you will get your skin URL like http://www.ownskin.com/home?u=%5Busername%5D (Replace [username] with your user name). You can send that link to your friends. Users can subscribe to your themes / Message you or Sign your guest book.
Hope you will start creating themes now. Please don’t forget to share your themes for us. ;)
Do you have any difficulty in finding themes for N73? Here I am listing ten sites where you can download free themes for your Nokia N73. The listing is in arbitrary order.
This site has a large collection of themes, softwares etc. Themes can be sorted by newest first, rating, most downloaded etc. If you do not register, there will be download limits and download delay of 20 seconds.
Though the collection is not very large in numbers, you can find some cool themes including the OS X style theme. For compatibility notations used in the site, you can visit this page
The list is not huge. But has some cool themes like Winter Vista.
One problem you might find here may be the lack of thumbnail view in listing page. You need to click on an item to get the details with thumbnail. But if you have some patience to click on all the links, you will find some good themes.
The pages are easy to navigate. You can sort by rating, popularity etc. You need to register before you can download a theme.
You only need to click on the thumbnails to start downloading.
Large collection of user submitted themes.
This is a German site. The above link will show the translated version by Google. Though the collection is not large, some themes looks good.
One Bonus Site :)
Here you can find user submitted themes for s603rd edition phones. You may need to register in the forum for downloading.
Note: Do you know a better site for downloading themes? Please share :)
Earlier in this blog, I ‘ve written about a site where you can create your own themes. But that was a paid service. But the advantage there was it was very easy creating your themes. You can create one by just uploading some images, some clicks and typings here and there and the theme will be created for you.
Here I am describing about creating free themes using the Nokia Carbide.ui S60 Theme Edition 3.1. The disadvantage here is, it is not very easy and a little more complex. But it is very very powerful. A complete professional tool. You can customize everything in your theme. So you can be proud of your work.
Also, you should have a powerful computer to run this Eclipse based application. What they recommend is atleast 512 MB RAM and 1.5 GHz or equivalent processor. Though it may run on lower configurations, the program may not be stable.
To download visit Forum Nokia. You need to register first before downloading. (You may need to enter the same registration details twice). The file size is more than 130MB. So it may take a while to download.
Once downloaded completely you can install it. You can register your copy for free by Help -> Register Now
Following is a short introduction to getting used with the interface. You should also check the tutorials provided in the application.
When creating a new theme, this dialog box will appear. You should type a theme. In the Theme content area, you can link it to an existing theme(that existing theme files will be edited) or you can copy a selected theme to start with (In case you need to create a new theme based on an existing one) or you can select the default theme to start with. The based on release option should be selected as base graphics for N73 as it is a S60 3rd edition.
This is the main interface for creating/modifying a theme. The more you experiment with it, the better will be the result. I have marked the important areas with red comments. For editing graphics you need to select third party tools including an SVG editor. (These editors can be selected in Windows->Preferences->Carbide.Ui -> External tools)
Go to Tools->Handle Key Pairs and click on the New Button to create a new Key Pair.
In the next dialog box, click New to create a New Key Pair
Type in the necessary fields and click Generate to create a new key pair.
Now you are ready to create the SIS package for the theme. (On the right side, the changed properties will be checked. (For eg:If you have changed the color in the base theme, then it will be shown as checked)
Click Next to continue.
Though, this is a very powerful application it lacks the simplicity in creating themes. You need good patience to experiment with it. Once you mastered it, you can create professional quality themes. A better place to start will be Tutorials (Help -> Welcome)
Wish you all the Best! :)
